Ssikkek Korean Grill BBQ Buffet

Wednesday afternoon sees me going to Ssikkek Korean Grill BBQ Buffet with a group of friends for lunch. I have patronaged its sister branch 2D1N Soju Bang, but this is my first time at Ssikkek!

We were there for a good half an hour before it opens for business because one of my friends advised that we should be early since the restaurant don't do reservations for lunch buffets.

True enough, a queue started to form behind us slightly after 11am! Hungry people on the loose!

Attacking the pork belly and well marinated chicken! (And the rest of the meat which I didn't manage to capture on the camera because I was too busy barbecuing and eating!)

The meat was well marinated and with fantastic bbq skills, the meat tasted heavenly. Definitely a 5/5.

Other than meat, there were also side dishes to choose from. From sausages to corn salad to stir fried glass noodles to mixed vegetables. To pretend that we are actually health conscious, we wrapped the cooked meat in fresh lettuce with kimchi and Korean chilli paste before tucking it into our mouths. :p

Despite the fact that the restaurant was full during our visit, our water was refilled so many times without any grumbles and our aluminium foil was changed ever so frequently. The best part was that the buffet spread was also topped up every now and then! I really got to give them a 5/5 for excellent and prompt service.

Overall, Ssikkek is a pretty good choice for group gatherings and definitely value for money!

Saveur

Glenn & I finally went to check out Saveur (sah-vere) at Purvis Street after hearing that they do French cuisine at affordable prices. We have yet to try French cuisine! There was already a snaking queue when we reached there. Despite being really hungry at 8pm, we decided to wait and see what is in store for us.

Are you ready to order or not?! - Glenn

And this is my I-Have-Been-Waiting-For-Very-Long face.

Yes, we waited for quite some time before our orders came! Not forgetting that we were there on a Friday ( 8 June 2012) night, the restaurant was packed to its fullest even when it was nearing their closing hours and most of them were working adults.

Angel Hair Pasta With Tiger Prawn And Lumpfish Caviar - $6.90 (4/5)

I was actually expecting tiger prawns and not DICED tiger prawn. But looking at the price, we would probably sound ingrate and cheapskate to complain. A mistake on my part for not reading the description of the dish on the menu carefully. Nevertheless, the tiger prawn and the caviar is a perfect match! I love how they complement each other so well.

Angel Hair Pasta With Sherry Minced Pork And Sakura Ebi - $3.90 (4/5)

At first glance, the Sakura Ebi (hei bi look alike) looks disturbing, with the eyes looking back at you, but I am glad to inform you that its taste is nowhere near its looks.

From here on, our dinner experience started to go downhill when we realised that the staff had forgotten our orders.

Crispy Pork Belly With 62.5 degree Egg With Diced Vegetable  - $10.90 (3/5)

Glenn was thoroughly taken aback when the pork was served. I suspect that he is a Muslim. Or that the portion did not correspond to the price. Oh well, fine dining.

The best part of the pork belly is the crispy skin, but it wasn't very well done. Could be due to the rush to serve it to us, could be that it just wasn't nice. Half the skin was too hard, which made eating it difficult, and the other half was too soft, which got stuck onto my teeth. Other than that, there was something missing in the flavour of the pork belly. The poached egg was my favourite (Glenn: But she tried to pick it up with her fork, which cause the yolk to spill, that silly girl), though I did not like the lentils at all.

I thought the three put together were simply a mismatch.

Our Pistachio Panna Cotta never came and and all that's left were disappointment. No doubt that they were all smiles and ready to receive customers, but they failed to take care of the smallest details.
