Grin Affair

While I was researching on how to get to the internship company which I was suppose to have interview with, I was thrilled to know that Grin Affair is in close vicinity!

Grin Affair specializes in jar cakes and the first time I had some was on my 20th birthday this year. Glenn knows that I have been wanting to try their cakes so he surprised me with two jars that day! <3

He bought me Dark Chocolate and Hazelnut flavors. But I kinda forgot how they taste like so I decided to pop by Grin Affair after my internship interview! I was a little too early when I reached (about 11am) because they only open for business at 12 noon.

But I must be in luck that day because Grin Affair opened (while I was still lingering around and waiting for my bus) shortly after! First customer of the day is me. YAY!

Grin Affair promotes recycling so you are more than encouraged to return your jar to get a ticket! You can accumulate your tickets and redeem those items. Other than the jar, the string can also be reused.

Check out these nice packaging for the jar lids!

Dark Chocolate - $5.50 (4.5/5)

Grin Affair only accepts cash so I put together all the loose change I had and bought a jar. It was a treat to myself after my internship interview, even though Glenn said I should only celebrate after I am being accepted into any of the companies. Haha! Ok la I admit, I just want to eat. No other reasons.

I thought the amount of sea salt dulce de leche was just nice and I was literally scraping the dark chocolate mousse down to its last bit. Mmmm so goooooood. I'll pop by again soon to try other flavors!

Simple recipe: Creamy Mushroom Pasta

On one of those spontaneous weekends, I went over to Dharshiney's place to bake. Being a hospitable host, Dharshiney decided to whip up a simple lunch for me! For those of you who are looking for a healthier alternative to your quick and lazy lunch aka maggie mee, here's how!

A friend from IJ, NURUL ATHIRAH taught me the basics for this when I went over to her place for dinner. I just improvised :D

You will need:

Sufficient for 4 people

1) Extra Virgin Olive Oil

2) 6 - 7 cloves of garlic, chopped finely.

3) 1 medium bowl of mushrooms (any kind), chopped coarsely.
*I used White Button Mushrooms in this recipe.

4) 2 cartons of EMBORG Cooking Cream / Whipping Cream.
*I used whipping cream because there wasn't cooking cream at Fairprice but both works fine.

5) Red Chillies / Chilli Padi. One chilli padi is enough for a kick but add to taste.

6) A single packet of Cheddar Cheese (to thicken the sauce)
*I used the ones you would usually add as pizza toppings.

7) 4 cups of pasta. I used fusilli in this recipe.
*Cream based pastas are better with linguine/fusilli but it's personal preference.

8) Salt, to add when you cook the pasta

9) Pepper, to taste.

Have 2 pots on hand:
1) For the cream sauce
2) For the pasta (get a large deep pot)
You will also need a colander to drain the water once the pasta has been cooked al dente.

Step 1:

Estimate a serving of your choice of pasta.
Roughly about 4 cups or more for 4 people.
I used Barilla's fusilli.

Step 2:

Boil a pot of water at the same time (the deep pot for the pasta).
While the water is on the stove, prep the ingredients.
Wash the garlic, mushrooms and chilli.
Then chop the mushrooms and chilli coarsely.

For the chilli, you can choose to add or remove the seeds.
For those of you, like Chu Fang, who can't take spicy food, use normal chillies.
Then remove the seeds so it won't be as spicy.
Personally, I like the extra kick, so I'd leave the seeds in.

Step 3:

For the garlic, mince them finely but don't over do it.
The garlic would burn really quickly if it's too fine.
Set the prepped ingredients aside on a plate or bowl.

Now, don't forget about the pot with the boiling water.
Once the water has started to boil, add a tablespoon of salt to the water.
Once the salt has dissolved, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the water.
This is to prevent the pasta from sticking together.
Add the pasta to the water and cook as instructed on the box/packet.
Once done, drain the pasta in a colander and leave to cool.

Step 4:

In a medium sized pot, on medium heat add 4 to 5 tablespoons of olive oil.
Once the olive oil has heated up, fry the chopped garlic until golden brown.
Careful not to burn the garlic.
At this point, I would add sliced chillies but if you can't take spicy food, leave them out.

Step 5:

Then add the sliced white button mushrooms and saute them till they have been watered down.
You would be able to see the mushrooms shrink a whole lot.
Add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Just to add a little flavour.

 Step 6:

Then add both cartons of cream into the already sauteed garlic, mushrooms and chilli.
Stir continuously, so that the cream thickens.
Add cheese to the sauce to thicken it up more.
Just add bit by bit till the thickness is to your liking.

Once the sauce is done, ensure the water is thoroughly drained from the colander.
Then add the pasta to the sauce and stir till well combined.
You can choose to add even more cheese to the pasta to give it that cheesy feel.

Tada! A plate of yummy Creamy Mushroom Pasta is served!

You could add prawns, chicken or whatever you want in place of the mushrooms. Either way, it would be just as yummy. Just be sure to cook the meat well before you add the cream.

For this recipe, I don't really have specific measurements. I usually go with my gut and roughly estimate based on the number of people I cook for. Always remember that if you enjoy what you do, it would always turn out alright! Just use your imagination, add a loads of love and change things up once in awhile! Try this recipe out and let me know how it goes!

Little Part 1 Cafe

Chu Fang has this list of places to visit (that is never ending) so every week we try to strike one off the list if we can. This week, we visited Little Part 1 Cafe which is tucked away in Jasmine Road.

"An indie cafe located in quaint Jasmine Road. Serving comfort food, coffee and alcohol that make the world goes round. The third place. Neither work nor home." - Little Part 1 Cafe

Chu Fang is also very proud of this shot (using my phone) and says she can do couple photoshoot already. Any takers?

Honey Roasted BBQ Ribs - $22.90 (3.5/5)

So, I was instantly attracted to the ribs when I first saw the menu (Glenn's a carnivore meat lover, no surprises here) and I decided to order that. I must say that I made quite a good choice. The ribs were very tender and succulent, but the taste of the sauce reminded me of fried pork paste ...

which can be a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. If you like fried pork paste like me, the sauce will taste awesome. But on the other hand, it's supposed to be Honey BBQ Ribs so I have no idea why it would taste like canned food.

Curried Fries - $7.90 (2/5)

Decided to order the curry fries because Chu Fang said it was a must try. Whoever said that to her must most definitely be Indian.

Fish & Chips - $18.90 (2.5/5)

Chu Fang decided to order the Fish & Chips as it was the cheapest in the menu (typical Chufang :p). First bite into the fish, Chu Fang said it tasted alright, but it tasted slightly fishy to me. She didn't manage to finish her food in the end. (Said she wanted to puke. Haha.) Guess I made her paranoid when I told her about it.

Fries overload! Not that it wasn't nice, just that we were too full.

The cafe's atmosphere was homey and cosy, much like Kombi Rocks. Oh and if you prefer to dine in alfresco, do check out their outdoor seating at the back.

Chiso Zanmai

Dharshiney asked me out for a Japanese buffet lunch date at Chiso Zanmai two days after she got back from her school trip to Japan. Only been back in Singapore for two days and she is already missing Japan food! This girl ah.

So anyway, when she asked me, it strucked me that Chiso Zanmai is the place which Glenn and I have been wanting to check out because every time we walk towards Central from MICA Building, we are always attracted to the crowd in the restaurant! Seems like a popular restaurant, yes?

Greeted by the dessert counter when we entered!

We didn't try their shizuoka oden because they didn't look that appetizing.

I just realized they spelled pork bace instead of base. -.-

We tried their ramen, and totally regretted our choice. No doubt the pork slices were quite decent, the rest of the ramen was just ... meh.  The broth was too soupy and noodles too soft. It was as though we were having maggie mee instead of ramen.

Interestingly, the patrons here have a queuing culture.

I am enamored with their mackerel! <3

Look how happy Dharshiney is with all the glorious food in front of her!

But then again, Chiso Zanmai is slow in refilling the food. Their cold counter (consists of salad and some seafood) was rather empty when we went back for our 2nd round.

We were there on a Tuesday and that probably explains the small crowd that day.

The sushi they serve are rather average, nothing much to rave about.

Their matcha tofu was so goooood we had a few more pieces.

Their soft serve ice cream comes with a variety of toppings to choose from, and you can even add some Hershey's chocolate or strawberry sauce to it! Awesome much.

Overall, the staff were efficient in clearing our plates (maybe a little too enthusiastic at the same time) and we thought Chiso Zanmai is actually quite a good place for birthday celebrations if you are looking for a restaurant that won't burn your pocket and has ample space for large group gatherings.

I heard they serve sashimi for the dinner buffet, do check it out if you love your sashimi!

Menya Musashi

The Star Vista is simply a food haven! Made a second trip there for Menya Musashi because there was a loooooong queue the first time we went! And also because it is highly raved by many other bloggers!

The award winning Menya Musashi has become a household name in Japan since making its debut in 1996. Credited as the pioneer of a new ramen culture in Japan, they strive to bring new experiences to customers through their revolutionary ramen. Featuring a creamier soup base than most ramen, it comes in white, red and black versions. The signature white tonkotsu broth is made with a substantial amount of pork bones, giving the ramen broth a thick taste full of oomph! - Menya Musashi

The outlet at Star Vista is pretty small and the seats are very near to each other. So for those who value privacy, this might not be an ideal place for you. Personally, I don't really like to be seated so close to others. :/ But since we were just there for a quick lunch, I just had to make do with it.

If you are lucky to be seated near the kitchen, you can see the preparation of your food (or the handsome/serious faces of the chefs) hahaha.

And at Menya Musashi, you get to choose from 3 choices of soup base: White, Black or Red.

White Cha Shu Ramen - $12.90 (4/5)

I prefer my ramen in pork bone broth and did I mention I am a big fan of thick soup base? Don't be fooled by the broth which looks soupy here! It's actually quite thick and I really like it. Not only did the broth taste nice, the cha shu slices were tender and they literally melt in your mouth. Totally orgasmic! Noodles were firm and chewy too.

What's a good bowl of ramen without ajitsuki tamago!? The egg yolk was not as runny as I had expected it to be, but it was still quite good. There you have it, a big bowl of comfort food on a rainy day. Perfect.

Black Kakuni Ramen - $14.90 (4.5/5)

Before I could take a proper and unmessy picture, Glenn already started on his ramen. I guess that's how good his ramen was!

Bokuto Gyoza - $5.90 (4/5)

There is just something very different (in a good way) about their gyozas that I simply cannot fathom. We felt that the skin of the gyozas are thinner than the other gyozas we tried before, and the fillings are much different too.

Service wise, the staff were really enthusiastic about refilling our cups of water even though we just took a few sips. And in case some of you are unaware, it is acceptable and considered polite to slurp your noodles in the Japanese culture. So don't be shy, go ahead and slurp your ramen!
